The town of Columbia, Maryland is one of the first “planned communities” in the United States. A “planned community” is one built from scratch that is designed to provide its residents with any needs, whether they are residential, educational, commercial, or recreational. Columbia is located in Howard County, thirty minutes Southwest of Baltimore and forty-five minutes Northeast of Washington, D.C., making the major metropolitan areas very accessible.
